Let’s take the guesswork out of the "what should we do?" decision. Here’s your curated hit list for an awesome weekend in Philly.
1. Immerse Yourself in History & Culture (Air Conditioning Optional!):
Museum Marvels: If the weather is inclement (a.k.a. HOT or rainy), head into one of our world-renowned museums. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is more than just the Rocky Steps – it has a lot of stuff to look at. The Barnes Foundation, rich in African-American and other types of art (and architecture, might I add), is a truly remarkable art experience. The Franklin Institute is a great place for the curious mind and is perfect for people of all ages!
Pro Tip: Always check museum websites for special weekend exhibits or events!
Liberty Bell & Independence Hall: Never not iconic. Amble through Independence National Historical Park. Stand in front of the Liberty Bell and feel history! Take a tour of Independence Hall. (Get timed tickets!) It’s free and always awe-inspiring. Meander to Elfreth's Alley – interesting fact? This is America’s oldest residential street.
Magic Gardens Explosion: Immerse yourself in Isaiah Zagar's magical mosaic wonderland on South Street. Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is pure creative and vibrant inspiration. You won't know what to do or how to process it all. Wander through the outdoor labyrinths and indoor galleries. There's nothing else like it!
2. Feast Like a Local (Because Philly Eats are Legendary):
The Mad Rug of Reading Terminal Market: Get prepared for sensory overload! Jump into the organized chaos of Reading Terminal Market. Get a legendary roast pork sandwich from DiNic's, grab a few baked goodies from the Amish market, slurp some oysters, or take in some international goodies. You’ll want to arrive early or late to avoid the noon crowd.
BYO (Bring Your Own) Bliss: Enjoy a truly Philadelphia experience by visiting a BYO (bring your own) restaurant. BYO restaurants save you money on drinks and provide amazing food. Research quaint little finds in spots like Queen Village, Bella Vista, or Fairmount. Find locations or book your table ahead of time by using an App (Resy/OpenTable).
Al Fresco Dining: Grab a sidewalk table! There are a ton of places to experience al fresco dining; neighborhoods like East Passyunk Avenue, Fishtown, and Manayunk are packed with al fresco dining choices, so it's a great experience for people watching as you sit down to eat. Fits the summer mood.
3. Soak Up the Sun & City Vibes (Parks & Views!):
Schuylkill River Trail Walk/Bike: Get fit with great skyline views. Walk, jog, or bike on the Schuylkill River Trail. You can easily rent bikes through Indigo if necessary. Check out the Fairmount Water Works or just lounge on Kelly Drive.
Spruce Street Harbor Park Chill: You can't get through a summer in Philly without experiencing it! Spruce Street Harbor Park is your harbor oasis. Easily recline on colorful hammocks, grab a beverage and food from food vendors, play some lawn games, or relax and enjoy the sunset over the Delaware. It's magical, especially in the evening.
Park Picnic Bliss: Pack a basket! If laying out on a beautiful, shaded lawn watching fellow Philadelphians isn't in your plans, you must experience Rittenhouse Square for people-watching! Washington Square is a fantastic park too; it has a relaxed historical vibe. Clark Park in West Philly has a great Saturday farmers market (arrive early if you want to find a good spot)! Simple bliss.
4. Catch a Show or Game (Feel the Energy!):
Live Music Gems: check the listings! Places like Johnny Brenda's (Fishtown), World Cafe Live (University City), The Fillmore (Fishtown), and The Mann Center (Fairmount Park - check their schedule!) host amazing weekend acts regularly. If it's indie rock, jazz, or whatever - you can find your magic.
Phillies Fireworks?: Watch the Phils battle it out at home! Citizens Bank Park is electric, so check the schedule for Friday or Saturday night home games - sometimes they have post-game fireworks! A classic Philly summer night.
Theatre Under the Stars: Check the Mann Center and Penn's Landing to see who is playing. I've seen free outdoor performances in parks at times - check the events listings!
5. Neighborhood Exploration (Find Your Vibe!):
Fishtown Funky Finds: Visit this hipster capital called Fishtown and check out all the crazy shops along Frankford Avenue, enjoy some great coffee, and have a couple of craft beers at a couple of great breweries, you pick, Evil Genius or the Philadelphia Brewing Company, great street art along the Ave too!
Italian Market Meander: Go check out 9th Street Italian Market, which is such wonderful chaos. Try all the cheese, meat, fresh produce, and pastries. Get yourself an authentic cannoli, and find yourself in sensory overload in the best way! Go hungry!
University City Buzz: Walk near Penn and Drexel, (by the campuses, they are beautiful), visit the Penn Museum (Archaeology/ Anthropology), and pick from a ton of great food options in the area around 40th Street.
Pro Tip for a Smooth Philly Weekend:
SEPTA is Your Buddy: Use buses, subways, or the trolley. The Independence Pass has unlimited rides (1, 2, 3, or 5 days) and will typically be less expensive than rideshare or parking. I would also download the SEPTA app for schedules and passes.
Comfort is Paramount: Philadelphia is a city to walk. No kidding, wear comfortable shoes! Later, you will thank your feet.
Check the Weather and Plan Ahead: The weather in Philadelphia can change often. Dress in layers. If your plans include popular restaurants, museums, or shows, it is beneficial to purchase tickets/reservations in advance, especially on the weekends.
Ready, Set, Explore!
Philly has so much life this weekend. Whether you’re just going back to favorites or discovering something new, allow yourself to feel the energy. Get yourself a water ice (that’s a Philly thing!), slip on some sneakers, and dive right into everything this great city has to offer. Have an amazing weekend, Philadelphia!
